A Message From Our Founder

As the Chairman of the Board of the Mark Bookman Foundation, and more importantly, as Mark’s father, I would like to welcome you to the official launch of our Newsletter and the website: www.markbookmanfoundation.org. Two and a half years ago, I was in Tokyo watching my son being filmed for the documentary "Mark: A Call to Action." It still is difficult to believe that Mark would unexpectedly pass away six weeks after his interviews, only to be followed by the death of his sister Rachel just 19 months later.

Although I continue to be devastated by the loss of both my children, through the Mark Bookman Foundation (MBF) we continue their fight for advocacy and disability rights. Please take a few moments to browse our Newsletter and the website. Discover how we strive to promote disability awareness and offer support to communities worldwide. There is much to do about this, and I know I speak for all our Board members when I say we are excited, encouraged, and grateful that you are joining us on this journey.

If you are not familiar with the documentary that sparked this, please watch it using the links on our website. It will give you an idea of the struggles Mark and many individuals with disabilities face, as well as what needs to happen to bring about real change on a large scale. As a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible organization, I ask that you help us in any way you can via our donation page on the website. Mark fully intended to spend his entire life working on disability advocacy. Although his life was cut drastically short, and he is no longer with us, we cannot let his voice go silent.

Sharing Common Ground Podcasts

Podcasts with Mayor Billy are available on the Mark Bookman Foundation website. On May 9, 2025, Billy welcomed Alex Jackson for a conversation about his life and disabilities. Alex was disabled as a toddler returning from a visit to his grandparents in Augusta, GA. The car his mother drove was struck head-on when another vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. His mother, a pediatrician at the Medical University, was severely injured but recovered. Jackson suffered a debilitating spinal trauma and lives full-time in a wheelchair. He has never walked. To say Alex lets nothing stand in his way would be an understatement. Billy was clearly taken by this extraordinary young man, and you will be as well.
